Mandatory Phys-Ed for MBAs | |||||||||||||||||
In the spirit of the recent curriculum reform phenomena affecting many top schools in the US, here is an extra ingredient missing in MBA curriculum - mandatory physical education classes. Sure, its a throw-back to our days in elementary school but now more than ever, healthy living is something that we can not turn a blind eye to. Though we are all graduate level students physical activity is one of the tasks that is often dropped given the deluge of meetings, classes, and extracurricular activities. Well, why not incorporate some sort of Mandatory Phys Ed Module in MBA curricula? The requirements could be simple - 5, thirty minute sessions of physical activity per week. Students can form interest groups and exercise together engaging in a variety of activities, from rowing to weight training. For those that already exercise, this program won't be anything new to them. For the students who do not exercise, this will be a great way to promote healthy and active living - which ultimately will lead to a better well-being and balanced lifestyle. The phys-ed module can be self policing (thereby requiring no staff involvement), however it must be ingrained into the school's culture to ensure enforcement and effective implementation. Vote yes, to proposition Mandatory MBA PhysEd Class!

I like it. It would be another venue where the students can meet people and bond. Plus, there are certain sports that might fit well with an MBA program, like golf.
In theory this seems nice, but if you can’t do it on your own, exercising looses a little value and then comes the issues we all faced in high school gym. As long as it is not associated with the clicks and social dilemmas of high school it might work.
I love this idea! I don't generally have the time to workout nor am I that motivated to run to the gym when time permits. Having a PE type class would be great because I know I need the exercise and I'd have a group of people ready to workout with me.
: I definitely support this proposition – Given the consumption rate of pizzas and alcohol at school, training on using and encouraging committed time for physical exercises is surely another dimension to integrated perspectives. Even if the class is not for credit, a weekly event involving a given sport can help with social networking in addition to helping prolong a few lives of the rare YSOM species.
Sounds good. To be a great manager and a leader of business/society, you need to be fit!
On the one hand, requiring everyone to exercise means that all can do so without fear that others will "get ahead" in studies. On the other, making something mandatory is silly: If it were useful, the students would do it anyway. Since they do not (and spend time networking in bars, etc.) that must be better for their career prospects. A sad reality, perhaps, but ordering them to take care of themselves is worse.
Who pays?
