I propose an idea that would allow tired students to be able to rent a small bed in a room in which he/she can sleep at while at school. The school can charge a small fee for the amount of time the student sleeps in the room. This is much better and healthier than going into a library to take a quick 30 minut nap between classes.

I think this is a great idea, but I fear that there may be many implementation issues. A major obstacle that I foresee would be space. Many universities have limited space for classrooms, computer labs, etc. I am not sure how they would rationalize using any extra room for beds.

Great idea. Like the commuter nap places.

One caveat: what's to prevent OTHER activities from taking place in this rented bed? If everyone is in the same room, hopefully there'd be enough peer pressure to discourage double-occupancy in the beds, but...

Classrooms?

Barry Nalebuff, Jan 23 2007

I support it! It would also serve to lessen the guilt associated with napping in the library.

diegope06, Jan 23 2007

Great Idea, but like Barry mentions - what are classrooms for?

i like your idea for schools. also, check out this website:

http://www.metronaps.com/

started by a carnegie mellon graduate. it would be a great addition to a university, although i don't think students would pay the same prices metronap customers pay in new york.

Why not just have a room with a bunch of couches? There was a room at my school where they had put a bunch of couches for storage. I and many other students used them for naps all the time. The advantage of couches is that their backs gives you a little privacy. They also block some of the sound. They also don't take up as much space as beds, so you can get more of them in a room.

I love the idea of a rest lounge. There should be no fee for using it.

After witnessing a cookie decorating exercise in the HOM, I was convinced that "Nap time" was going to become part of the core curriculum (along with finger painting). were this the case, students could be issued floor matts which they could utilize during scheduled nap time, obviating the need for a proper bed.

PJR, Jan 23 2007

I totally agree with Dwayne. We had many places like this in undergrad. It allowed you to take a nap, then keep studying without having to go all the way home and take a longer nap than you should.

tkeefe, Jan 23 2007

It would be more flexible if hammocks were used, since they could be taken down when the space was needed for something else. Also, hammocks could be double-stacked, they way they were on troopships in WWI & WWII.

I think tired students should stop staying up all night and set themselves a bedtime so that they can stay awake during the day. The rest of us in the 'real' world don't have much opportunity for daytime naps either.

hrench, Jul 02 2008

I've read several articles in recent years where certain doctors and psychologists have argued that people would work better in the afternoon if they had a siesta in mid-day. So this is something that should be extended to the rest of us, if it works out. Let the students be pioneers.

Roger Knights, Jul 02 2008

hey... ya know its too bad we stopped taking naps. when we were young in kindegarden we took naps... and it would have been wise for them to keep on that trend, its healthy to rest especially when it comes to education, its not only the little kids who need it, they are the ones with this great amount of energy, i think you are right about this, but to add on, allowing the whole "sleep in school" concept to be a real thing... i know it would show improvment if we all had a little nap after lunch.
