Brussel Sprout Renaming | |||||||||||||||||
People have a negative perception of brussel sprouts, though most have probably never even tried them. They are frequently associated with unhappy children not being allowed to leave the dinner table until they eat these vegetables on their plate. That probably happened only once, 250 years ago. Brussel sprouts are great! They deserve better. If they were renamed (just as prunes are now dried plums), people would approach them with an open mind and many would be very glad that they did. Mini Cabbage? European Cabbage?

Maybe we could have European Cabbage campaign, just like the "Eat a Banana" campaign, and have the European Commission -or some other official body- endorse the vegetable. My only concern is that Belgium may just be a bit cross. Wonderful idea though.
I'm a Belgian and I wouldn't be cross. We don't call them Brussels sprouts though, just sprouts or 'spruitjes' in Dutch and we have the same problem. It's a vegetable young children don't like, just like another of our vegetables: chicory (Belgian endive?). So a name change would only help temporary, after a while it would get the same bad connotation.Actually we Belgians are more 'cross' that you call fries 'French fries', if you'd come to Europe and eat fries in both France and Belgium, you'd soon be calling them Belgian fries, believe me.
