Prior to watching a show on television, you have the option on what type of products you want advertised to you (in some sort of interactive manner - i.e. on your remote). This way, you control the type of products you see versus having to sit through commercials of products you may have no interest in. I realize that advertisers want you to think that you need their product, but I believe that consumers are more savvy than advertisers think, and if shows allow us to control the commercials then the advertising will be that much more targeted. Advertisers will have to be very selective on what shows they run on. The television shows can tell the advertisers how many people chose to watch their ads. To get the advertisers interested in this system, offer the names of the consumers who chose to watch their commercial. To get the consumers interested, tell them that they don't need to sit through another Viagra commercial if they don't want to.

This is a great idea. This is already (sort of) happening with the fragmentation of TV into specialized cable networks, but as a male who watches "Judging Amy" I can definitely appreciate the annoying qualities of commercials outside my "demographic".
In the same vein, why not have Neilson ratings on the commercials. If people change channels during the commerical (becuase it is boring or the wrong audience) then the advertiser would have to pay more (as it delivers fewer custoemrs to the next commercial).
In the spirit of your suggestion, it is also a puzzle to me why HBO doesn't accept ads for movies currently running in cinemas. As a movie goes, I acutally like those ads.
I think you're on to something. Maybe it could work like amazon or netflix where you rate the commercials you see for the content they are selling and entertainment value. Then the TV selects your next commercials based on what people who liked the ones you liked also picked. Then you vote again until it knows you pretty well.
Perhaps the answer is a new cable network - the commercial channel. It would be free/low cost to cable operators since advertisers would pay to have their commercials on the network. In return, not only would they get the "eyeballs" watching their adverts, but valuable Nielson data.
Exactly, don't bombard me with ads for products I have no way of affording or otherwise purchasing, use for, or already have or do regularily purchase.
