Heat on/off timer | |||||||||||||||||
The heat costs us by the length of time we turn it on. We are not to turn it on when we are out of home, but like it to warm up the house before we are back. A simple on/off timer on the heat, which can turn on the heat automatically, can help.

Good idea. The technology exists already for space heaters (I had one and it was great - set it to heat up the bathroom a half hour before I got up)...now to apply it to a whole unit...
I think such technology exists... you can get programmable temperature controllers that you can use to set the temperature at different levels throughout the day (and also for different days of the week)
There are numerous programmable electronic thermostats that allow you to program over 20 time settings for both heating and cooling in different zones of the house. I think they start at about $50 at Home Depot.
These devices have been on the market for decades.
