If Walgreens & CVS make the vast majority of their profits from the pharmacy, why not start a chain of high-tech pharmacies without the food area. Walmart will probably take the food/household goods business anyway, so start a chain of stores that does nothing but sell prescriptions (and related items such as over the counter pills) and makes it an extremely convenient experience. Patrons can submit their order online, or use a computer in the store to scroll through and purchase the entire inventory. The store would take only about 10% of the space that a traditional convenience store would, and since everything is ordered online and prepared for the customer to pick up (or have delivered) only a small portion of that space would actually have to be built out.

The food, chocolates etc are to induce customers to visit frequently and become familiar and comfortable with the place. If you remove these soft purchases how will you attract initial customer attention?
Minus the high-tech end of this, it already exists - or used to. Small towns still have real pharmacies, some of which only sell medications and related items. Some have expanded to include greeting cards, toiletries, small gifts etc. Most of these small town pharmacies offer call-in and delivery service.
What makes them work there (besides that everyone's parents, grandparents, etc went there) is that they're full service and convenient (close to home). In a larger city, you'd need them every few blocks. Since Walgreens is already every few blocks, and you can call in or renew your meds online, this would be a hard push.
In addition, most health insurance companies have mail-order pharmacies that don't have retail space and so their costs are very, very low.
