Ladies out there: We all wear our flip flops or sneakers when commuting to work or walking to class to avoid or at least postpone the agony of wearing heels. However, is anyone else irked when their heels are hard to carry in briefcases or bags? Often my heels punch holes through my bags or waste valuable space. With a retractable heel these annoyances could be avoided. All heels would bend by a hinge at the base of the heel. When the woman wanted to put her heels on she would fold down the heel and secure it into place with a hidden snap function for safety. No more pain, more space, less damage to bags!

This is the third time this idea has been posted -- perhaps there is something here.
We have telescoping heels and <a href="http://www.whynot.net/ideas/3153> removeable heel shoes.
I don't wear heels, but I have great sympathy for heel toting women. I think this is a great idea - if someone can make it work. If the shoe without the heal could be a respectable flat, it could serve all kinds of purposes.
One might even take it a step further and have heels with adjustable heights. There have been numerous times that my wife has admired a pair of shoes, but decided that the heel was too high for them to be practical.
I think there were two female designers playing with this idea on ABC's American Inventor a couple seasons back--they were making detachable stilletos. I stopped watching before they got voted off, but I believe they were having difficulties producing a prototype that provided sufficient arch support at different heel heights, and the heel wasn't stable in other prototypes. However, oh what I wouldn't pay for such a shoe if it is comfortable as flats, because there's nothing more frustrating than uncomfortable flat shoes.
