Many video games allow gameplay with customized charaters of your own design. What if you could make a character, and then use it in multiple games (e.g. a character from Tony Hawk could play football in Madden NHL, etc...)?

See the Nintendo Wii and the Mii character creation. You create a Mii, and the character is then playable in all of the Nintendo Sports games. Remains to be seen whether they will allow this Mii in future Nintendo games, or whether other game publishers will allow the possibility--but the idea is there.
