I hate having to fumble with my keys to unlock the front door, especially when I'm carrying a bunch of groceries or its really cold and I have gloves on. Some systems already exist where an RFID card allows a person to enter a building by just holding his/her wallet up to a key pad.
Instead of RFID, why not use the signal identifier from your cell phone? And because the cell phone is a powered device which is more or less constantly transmitting a signal, it could be powerful enough to transmit the identifier from a short distance so you don't have to hold your phone up to a pad. As a backup, RFID chips could be built into cell phone sim cards so that if the phone battery dies, the RFID still functions to unlock the door (albeit with limited functionality). This idea could work for unlocking/starting cars as well, and may dovetail with some of the EZPass payment ideas in other posts.
