Oprah Winfrey just launched a Leadership Academy in South Africa. This $40 million facitily is a boarding school for 450 young girls providing them with: textbooks, uniforms, meals and an unparalleled opportunity. Oprah's critics asked why she chose to address an education crisis in South Africa when a similar pandemic exists in the United States.
Why isn't there a boarding school for the most disadvantaged students in the United States? The U.S. has boarding schools, but they typically serve the affluent, despite financial aid programs and initiatives like Prep For Prep that sends students from less advantaged backgrounds. There should be a Leadership Academy in the U.S., perhaps in Oprah's home state of Mississippi where test results prove that children need an answer beyond the failing public schools and No Child Left Behind Initiatives.

Milton Hershey endowed just such a school in Hershey, Pennsylvannia.
