Why not add a port to DVR machines that allows you to directly download your saved TV shows or movies to your ipod? That way, you could easily transfer your saved episodes from the cable box to your ipod.

For a couple reasons:

1: Most providers don't want "their" content to leave "their" domain, digitally.

2: Most DVRs don't have the horsepower to reasonably convert from the MPEG 2 they use to the MPEG4/WMV9 most PMPs use.

3: some PMPs (like the iPod) use a proprietary file/inex system and don't license 3rd parties to install media to iPods.

All 3 could be tackled with a PMP licensed with/by the provider/DVR company though, to ensure interoperabi;ity with loading, codec/DRM used, and program security.
