Saving energy is comparatively easier and a more viable solution to cater to our ever increasing demand for it than finding new ways or generating more energy.

Why not design the ways to save more and increase the effectivity of use of what we already have.

In street lighting, we are left with only two choices today. Either to find them On or to find them Off. In both cases not the commuters but the authorities decide. We do not have a choice of our own where we, the users, have the control to switch them On or Off as per our need. Exactly as we do in our homes.

Therefore, why not think of a smart street-lighting system where we have the control.

All you have to do is a mix and match of cheap and existing technologies and develop a sensor. This sensor is compact and consists of the following devices:-

1. A lux sensor ( required to activate the system )

2. A programable dimmer with timer

3. A speed sensor ( required for regular traffic)

4. A code reader or ( decoder)( required for emergency traffic like police, fire etc.)

5. A digital camera ( optional)

6. An ordinary counter which only counts the number of vehicles.(optional)

Or A hi-tech counter with time clock and number plate reader( optional)

Here is how it will work:-

1. It is automatically switched ON when it is the dark and remains ON, on dimmed lights.

2. As soon as a speedy vehicle enters, the sensor at the entrance pole detects it and signals full lighting.

3. A strech of road, as per the predetermined speed limit and pre-programmed sensor lights up in full. The vehicle keeps going untill the next sensor, which is in the middle of this stretch detects it and signals the next stretch to light up and so on. As the FULL LIGHT UP signal to the next stretch is processed, simultaneously, the DIM DOWN signal to the crossed over stretch is sent.

4. If a driver is over-speeding, lets say more than +10% of the allowed speed, he will have difficuties in getting full light.

5. In case of urgencies, when fire and police have to use these roads, the decoder or code reader reads their code by the help of a chip attached to their wind screens and takes over the preprogrammed system. The device reads their actual speeds and dims on and off accordingly.

6. We can use the optional devices( No. 5 & 6 ) if we want and can afford. These are important devices and can be put to use in case of controls, analytical studies of traffic and most importantly-- security purposes.

Assuming the energy saved economically outweighs the expense of such an elaborate system the concept has merit as long as there are safeguards against manipulation by iresponsible individuals. Perhaps, if such a system proves viable, it could be installed piecemeal over a long time period. The advent of highly efficient LED lighting may make the variability of lighting an unnecessary expense.

The street lighting currently in use would not support this type of application. They are not "instant on" like the lights in your house. They are for the most part High Pressure Sodium lights and dimming is not possible. They use a fair amount of power to "turn on" but use less once they warm up. If they go off the ballast system has to cool off before they can be relit.

LED streetlighting isn't available yet and judging from the problems encountered with LED traffic signals I have to guess they are a ways off. The signal lights are supposed to recoup the initial cost of the lights within 4 years based on energy savings. The signal lights are somewhat prone to failure (around here, anyway) and I'm guessing it'll take a bit more time to get the bugs worked out.

Like Sand says too, once you factor in the cost of all the additional equipment compared to the energy savings of LED lights the cost may be more than the energy savings will amount to.

Another thing to consider is that in an urban setting people get annoyed pretty fast with lights that are (malfunctioning) turning on & off. I have to guess they aren't going to be too happy with lights that cycle dim to bright and back again, however, maybe they could get used to it.

And, oh, yeah. . .

I am totally against cameras, plate readers, and speeding vehicle recorders in any form for any reason, especially so called security. George Orwell gave us a glimpse of where that stuff leads.

Hyenuf, Jan 30 2007

You guys are definately more oriented than me as far as technology is concerned. I am saying this quite Honestly. I do not know what LED technology is. Please let me know .

But

Assuming that this concept manages to get a green signal and the concerned companies are contacted in a competitive atmosphere to develop the required technology for sensors and lamps( bulbs ).

What would you suggest the volume in only America and Canada would be?

What would be the volumes world-wide including Russia, China, India, Japan, Australia and the whole European continent?

Will these quantities entice them to make it worth putting money in R & D and trials?

Eventually, is there any substance in my thought?

This is not the place to get technical information. Google will get you as much information as you can absorb.I appreciate the energy of your submissions but it would be advisable for you to submit key words to Google to round out your understanding of possibilities.

Street lights are also there for pedestrians.

Dwane Anderson, Jan 30 2007

Dwayne, Excellent point!

Naresh, LED = Light emitting Diode. You can get any color you want with filters.

Hyenuf, Jan 31 2007

Thanks Hyenuf,

I have tried to study a bit on google about it.

Lets forget things which are going to happen. Lets first pick up pockets where we can do something. If the system can not perform in dimming up or down on High pressure sodium lights forget it. Not all the places in world are using it either.

The concept is DIMMING and not witching completely ON and OFF.

Dwane,

You have a point but two things

1. Its not a sizeable amount of energy and this part can be postponed unless a suitable solution is found. You can also think of it.The nearest I can come is an ordinary <movement detect sensor> which we are already using. Couple it with X number of poles for an area as desired.

2. Lets not loose the focus, the focus is feasibility. And the work zone is bigger areas like highways and other long and sparcely travelled roads.

Long duration back up for aero generator Wind to wind hybrid generation Windmill could be a reliable source of energy / electricity for round the clock supply, provided a suitable Non-Battery long duration back up system is incorporated in the wind mill system. This back up system may be such that it should store the wind energy during generation period and should release the stored energy to run the aero generator to generate the electricity during non-generating period or when there is no wind, so the generation continuity is maintained. This system is ideally suitable for non grid dependent stand alone small wind mill / aero generator for domestic, villages and small commercial loads and highly suitable for self cointrolled street and high way light for each pole up to up 25 kw.

.The designer is ready to demonstrate the technology/ product on working model. The technology is also highly suitable for self alternately lighting street and high ways by generating electricity through moving vehical on road as such no wind mill is require Designer( R.S. Chauhan ) B.E.(Mech)

R.S.Chauhan, Feb 03 2007

Dear Chauhan,

Long duration back up system without battery? The only answer to mind is the <Wind technology>. You coil up( wind up) the roataions of windmill (just like the good old alarm clocks) and release their tension whenever you want, wherever you want and for whatever length of time you want.

If you are thinking about India, this should be the best solution taking into consideration all the complexities involved. Economic factor is the greatest concern and this technology will serve this purpose perfectly well. Cheap, long lasting, portable and non demanding in terms of maintenance. You can even time program it with the same old clock mechanics.

Thanks for taking interest in the idea.

Naresh Ahuja, Feb 03 2007

I hope I have not misunderstood you somewhere since you have mentioned hybrid way of generating energy. Which I could not get properly.

Secondly, as far as I know generating energy through moving vehicles has already been patented or lying pending in the US.
