Wireless service on airplanes | |||||||||||||||||
I'm not sure if this is technologically feasible, but if it is, why not offer wireless service (for computer use) on airplanes? Maybe through some sort of satellite provider, like the one that provides television service on JetBlue? If it's not possible to offer wireless service, I wonder if it would at least be possible to offer wired internet services to airline customers(you'd plug in an ethernet cord where you plug in your headsets; they'd hand out ethernet cords to you on the plane)? I know I'd be willing to pay $10 bucks or so for something like this on long-distance flights... I wonder why it hasn't already been done?

I think, the answer is security. As far as I think, it was possible to surfe while flying, telephones too but later they were banned with the fear of security loops.
But not so long in future, I hope this service will be revived. Some air-lines have already declared that.
I agree whole heartedly. As a road warrior, I could use the extra time to catch-up on not only business, but personal matters while being confined to my seat on the airplane!
I would love Wi-Fi on flights. Boeing introduced this service in collaboration with Intel a few years back. It was branded Boeing Connexion and was available on select JAL, SAS, and Lufthansa Flights. The technology was so expensive for airlines(who then passed that to passengers) that the demand was extremely soft. Boeing discontinued the program recently.
Already being done... I think the FCC just approved WiFi for planes in 2004 though... http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB117555160709857409-99MU2rqxzlF0BpJ1ks4sjaGWetY_20070410.html?mod=blogs
