U Turn Signal | |||||||||||||||||
As a corollary to one of my other ideas, the better brake light, I think a U Turn Signal would be an interesting add on to vehicles. How many times are you at an intersection turning left (or right in some parts of the world) and the person in front of you is not turning left at all, but making a U Turn? Personally, my expectations and driving behavior would be different if I knew someone was going to U Turn... I would create more space, accelerate slower, etc. As opposed to the brake light idea, this is harder to implement. There may have to be a separate button on the steering wheel, or the turn signal yoke may have an additional position to indicate a U Turn. It would require training and an additional learning curve for other drivers, which could delay the value of this idea should it ever be adopted. The indicators would also have to be clear and obvious. Once again, government legistation and or relevant industry groups can drive adoption faster if it can be determined this will reduce costs and save lives.

I don't see the difference between turning left and making a left U-turn. Either way I am not going to try to pass on the left.
But, regardless. A graphic display in the place of each tail light could provide specialized messages to the driver behind. I've been kidnapped, left turn, left U-turn, car is smoking, seat belt hanging out, kids throwing things, ...
