Essentially a wireless optical mouse, combined with a stud sensor. When the user sweeps it over a wall, it transmits the XY coordinates to a PC, laptop or PDA, along with a value representing the wall density. The user may scan back and forth in a raster pattern or scribble at random.

As the user scans the wall, a simple paint app draws the results on the screen. The XY coordinates are translated into screen coordinates and the wall density is converted into a brightness value. Brighter shades indicate denser material. The resulting image would look like an interior view of the wall.

The unit would come with four stick-on markers that help the user remember the limits of the scan.

An optional feature could transmit electrical activity within the wall to show power lines, drawn in a different color. (e.g. wall density in gray, electrical activity in red)

User would need to hold the scanner vertically (not tilted) and take care not to lift the scanner from the wall until done.

I like it. Add moisture sensors to find plumbing leaks.
