Neighborhood media offices | |||||||||||||||||
In some neighborhoods, the residents have very little contact with reporters, generally only encountering them when one of the residents is getting arrested. This can lead to distrust of the media and consequently, marginalization of that community. This situation may be improved if media representatives had a more permanent presence in each neighborhood in their region. Since individual media organizations may not have the resources to establish an office in each neighborhood, this could be helped by setting up an office to be used by all media organizations and independent journalists. Having a small store-front in each neighborhood would invite residents to come speak to media representatives. There could be a bulletin board (or something similar) on which residents could post information that they believe would be worth reporting. This may also include a room where reporters could interview residents. This would have the additional value of providing support for independent journalists (i.e. bloggers), who may not have the resources to gather leads on their own. Placing the office near a library or internet cafe could help the bloggers to publish the work that they are doing at the office. The office would probably need some sort of staff--perhaps volunteers from the neighborhood.
