One of the most annoying things about my home automatic irrigation system is that when on, it sprays water all over... the sidewalk, street, steps... and the dog and all others track it in the house. What if the irrigation system would disperse the water below the ground and thereby, the water would be delivered directly to the roots of the plants and not on the street, etc?

Great idea, though the underground network of piping might be cost prohibitive.

Drip systems for standard gardens need to be routed in some way to the plants you want to water. With a lawn you have literally hundreds of plants per square foot but I suspect a system could be developed.

Another problem to consider is that the ground may end up spongy or disrupted if the water should perculate up for some reason.

Drip systems are standard in dry agricultural areas such as Israel.

It is a good idea. I'd like to see a new vote category: already exists.

I agree with the other comments but as an former owner of a medium sized irrigation company, I'd suggest calling in the service techs to adjust the system (adjust heads, change nozzles, add heads, etc). A properly designed and installed system should not hit walks, driveways, roads, etc. Unfortunately, the techs can not help with the dog problem.

As Hyenuf points out, underground piping for turf would be expensive. Depending on the soil type, rows of pipe would be spaced 9-18" apart (maximum) for the entire turf area - thats a lot of pipe and labor to install it. Another alternative - reduce turf area and plant native plants with drip - drip is incredibly efficient and effective for non-turf applications.

Try using a watering can. It's good exercise, relaxing, and will get you away from the boob tube.
