Recently the '08 Presidential candidates all announced how much money they had collected. Ranges were from about 15 million to 25 million dollars a piece for the leading candidates.

If one of the candidates would take about 5 million of those dollars and donate it to a charity that all Americans could agree on (e.g. Katrina victims, cancer research, disabled vets, etc.) they would generate so much good will they would probably win the election.

The money would also be better spent than just giving it to the TV stations for 30 second advertising time.

Dream on.

I'm not entirely sure but I think that would be illegal.

Also do you really think that "all Americans" will agree on the same charity?

benmichaelx, Apr 06 2007

The other candidates would accuse them of trying to use a trick. It would be a trick, but one that I like. It is amazing how hard it is to turn charity dollars into better lives for real people. You might think 5 million would "shabang" a 1000 people into a better life... but how many 2 bedroom houses is that?

There could be a sweet union of politics and a charitable crusade, but it won't be easy.

One candidate would designate 6 million for charity, then spend 20 million telling us about it. We desperately need comprehensive campaign finance reform, not band-aids.

BamaDoc, Apr 13 2007

Just to mildly disagree with BamaDoc, I think bandaids are needed. I've noticed the best is the enemy of the better, or whatever that phrase is. Incremental improvement is better than waiting for perfection.
