I haven't had cable television in many years, but back when I did there were only a handful (if that) of channels that I was interested. However, through a gracious deal with my local cable operator I got to pay for all of them.

I think you should be able to pay for only the channels you want. I'm not sure if there's a way for them to only shoot you those channels, so maybe this wouldn't work, but it seems a pain to pay for 50 channels when you only really want say A&E and Comedy Central.

I am not sure how or when but media content is moving towards consumer control. Look at what napster did to music -- huge #s of consumers took what they wanted, no longer buying 12-15 tracks when they only wanted 2 or 3. The bell tolls for images (tv, movies, videos, etc..) as tivo and pay per view are helping to shift consumer expectations of choice and control. Soon maybe you will have a box with a menu that shows you what is on and you order it.

The problem is that it is likely that most consumers will want flexibility and will end up getting a subscription (hence monthly service) -- perhaps it will price like cell phones where consumers pay per viewing hour. If this occurs then everyone will know how much time they spend rotting their brains.

Um, it looks like we can delete this as it has been suggested before at http://whynot.net/view_idea.php?id=25

just because its been suggested before, doesn't mean its not a good idea. who cares about cspan3, and why would anyone pay for it? there is better Tv thats for free, like PBS. lets get this idea into action. who is running this website? who is in charge of putting these ideas to work? pay-per-perchannel.
