UIC regularly hosts scientific trade shows for the researchers at UIC, wherein different lab supply businesses (Fisher Scientific, BioLabs, etc.) showcase their latest wares for the reseacher lab personnel. My question is: why don't computer companies and office supply companies band together and do the same thing for the support staff, i.e., show them the latest in office supplies and train them on the latest innovations in computer software and all the things that computers can do. I have learned much about my computer and what computers can do indirectly from colleagues and friends, and it seems like there should be a regular milieu for support staff to learn what's new in the work place, and be trained in it, all at once.
