Restaurant Service | |||||||||||||||||
Why not allow customers to order from a interactive menu rather than having to wait for an under-trained inexperienced waiter or waitress. It would seem to put all of the control over the entire service in the hands of the customer. You could make sure that drinks are ordered and re-ordered as necessary. Also, you could input timing so that the appetizers come out in advance of the main course.

I heard on the news on my way into work that Microsoft just marketed a computer that is incorporated into a table top that can do this function. It is set up for multiple users and can also be used as a game table.
For some young, cosmopolitan, modern retaurant or bar, maybe.For old Mabel's Roadside Cafe, not likely.
I think this idea is excellent - I have been wondering when this would finally come. It seems so feasable - a screen at each table where the menu is always up to date (anything not available that day, is taken off, and this is immediately reflected on each table's computer!). Drink order and table number are electronically sent to the bar after the customer has placed this, and food order and table number are sent to the kitchen after the customer has placed this. Payment by debit card could be done on the table screen too (bill will be 100% correct, and customer won't feel COMPELLED to tip!)! The restaurant only needs to employ half as many waiting staff - they will be "runners" (no longer jotting down orders), and accuracy is all but guaranteed! I am interested in a_flama's research (see "touch Screen Ordering"), as I am researching this too! There is Bytes in Canterbury, England, Uwink in the USA, and thank you so much to au1650 (see "touch Screen Ordering") for telling me about the menulogic company! PLease y'all, keep me up to date with progress on this. Email:richardskaa@hotmail.co.uk Thanks!
I'll spill that beer I 'accidentally' ordered with my elbows all over that fancy touch screen. Of course I'm assuming the screen will literally be in the table, horizontally embedded right? I'm sure it will be safe if it's installed correctly.
Better pray magneto boy never eats there.
Also, I would worry about the issue of people just bored and entertained by a touch screen. Touchity, touchity, touch. Expect them to order stuff wrong, multiple times. Old people. They can't see very well, make sure they can read it. Make sure it's big and bright. Some people are really reluctant to use technology and would prefer an actual human to assist them. Freaks
If a picture of the item accompanied its text in the menu, mistakes would be less likely. The customer could be given a confirmation screen before the order finalized, to reduce mistakes and increase satisfaction. Perhaps a spoken-word recitation could accompany the confirmation, rattling off the items ordered. I think there's a lot of potential here--and if the initial adopters report success, many will follow.
PS: Microsoft should rename its "Surface Computer" as the TapTop Computer. It's catchier and less beige.
