A large national or regional chain (such as Target, Meijer, Wal-Mart) offers customers the option of donating the coins coming as change from their purchase to this month's designated charity. If the customer directs, the cashier simply hits the designated C4C button and gives the customer his dollars in change, but no coins. The amount that would have come to him in coins (ranging from 1 cent to 99 cents) goes to the charity, but the coins never change hands or need to be physically collected. The chain will change the recipient charity each month. This obviously works only for cash transactions.

The little charity collection boxes they have at cashiers work better; so easy to just put the change in there, more satisfaction for the person donating, and the easy option of donating any other change in your pocket, at the same time. Much more appealing.
