This is an idea I came up with about a year ago for rainforest conservation which allows for cutting (thus economic usage)

75% would be untouched, used only for tourism, scavenging and scientific exploration and research.

10% would be logged.

10% would be used for future logging.

5% Would be used for economic growth for those displaced by the reduction in land used for logging.

The two 10%'s used for cutting would work like this:

As ten percent are cut, the other ten percent are grown back. Once one group is cut, you replant and move on to the next group. You can heavily plant and fertilize - a concentrated tree farm is what I envision.

When you consider the size of the rainforest, 20% used for cutting is both sustainable and economically feasible - unlike clearcutting.

I would think that, given the naturally amazing farmland that a rain forest would provide (hence the slash and burn technique used to clear farmland), you could even separate another 5% and grow something like hemp, which could make all the products gained from cutting wood in the rain forest - only hemp is sustainable, grows fast and replenishes the soil, thus it would be economically a good idea.

Yes? No?

The reason that slash and burn is so destructive of forest is that it produces arable land of only temporary value. The forest soil is not particularly rich and quickly deteriorates so that more forest must be destroyed to agriculture. Once the forest land is destroyed it does not return to forest but becomes unproductive. See http://rainforests.mongabay.com/0804.htm

As the Bible says, love of money is the source of all kinds of evil. Your idea is great, but to implement it we would need to invade places like Brazil and kill most of the capitalists, i.e., most of the population. We're not quite ready for it, but (unfortunately) the day will come.
