I've been thinking of this one on and off and as far as I can see It's a very feasable idea. Why not combine the normal features of a key fob for a car with a universal programmable garage door opener. It would work very much the same way as the ones that are available now in many GM vehicles. It should be pretty cheap to produce as well.
