Chinese surnames | |||||||||||||||||
It has been on the news the past few days that the Chinese are running out of surnames. Why not name people after their profession, like Europeans were in the middle ages. Or name sons after the father's given name, like sons were named in the middle ages. There could be cultural reasons why it may not be done or doable though.

I think they do use such surnames... But think of it: if there are 1000 different kinds of professions, then only 1 million people would have the same surname... Definetly they have other name types too, just not enough :) But I agree, this can't be an unsolvable problem... they could start to use two surnames (from mother and father side) until coming up with another idea.
Hmmm...I'm Chinese and growing up I never blinked an eye at the fact that many of my classmates shared the same surname as me, I thought that was how it was everywhere! :) I don't see it as a big deal I guess. I also think that with cross-cultural marriages being more accepted now, that this will also add more variety to the surnames of future generations especially if you're into the hyphenating-surnames thing! (my husband is non-Chinese).
