The other photocopy idea gave me an idea. All copiers have grid marks along the the edge of the glass showing paper size. Why not have lines also etched on the glass to see exactly where the outer margins of a page size are. I realize this would need to be done carefully, so not to have the lines show up on the copy. Think of the times you photocopy a number of items on a single sheet, and one of them is always cut off.

How about dynamic marking?Either by light/laser beam that mark the current copied area - based on paper size, orientations and scaling, or by making the glass plate containing LCD which can be charged when the copier is open marking the relevant area.
