Aircraft Claustrophobia | |||||||||||||||||
My Parents are claustrophobic. This is a problem when they fly trans Atlantic flights. I was suggesting that aircraft companies like MCD, airbus, or Boeing should come up with a moon roof on long haul flights. Of course they cannot be opened. But they should be made transparent. This would let light in. During day flights this should be made opaque to stop sunlight and UV rays entering the cabin. At night it should be transparent for a wonderful flight under the stars. This would prevent the feeling of claustrophobia.

Horse trailers would never be the same, would they?
Feelings of claustrophobic conditions would be far outweighed by the visual image of sitting on top of an out of control aircraft hurtling through the sky at 600 miles per hour, 30,000 feet above sea level, lightning flashing through the sky and toward your tender craft, and then watching the plane descend amazingly fast to a landing, watching the landing strip in front of you disappear while the plane is slowing down.....
Yep, that would be a sales point for the safety brochure, all right....
What should be done with the people who get motion sickness on these "open roof" aircraft? Now they simply close one small window.
hmm, interesting point. If they are not scared of aircraft, simply suffer from claustrophobia then this should work. However, it would be too hard to create a see through roof. Firstly the weight of the glass and plastic would be much more than the actual duraluminum (carbon fibre now (787)) This would reduce the amount of passengers, or the fuel comsumption, takeoff length etc. Also the windows will never be as strong as the metal there in the first place. As with what happend in the early "comets" with their large windows, cabin de presurisation and other such events occured. It would be too dangerous, but maby one day they will do it? Who knows?
Consider a Heads Up Display (HUD) coupled with tour DVDs. The HUD could make the cabin appear to be a countryside to explore.
Traveling by plane yesterday made me rethink this. As a method of dealing with claustrophobia, I am not in favor of the original idea.
But.....as a potential thrill seeker, bungee jumper, mountain biker, white water rapids type....this may have a useful variation.
Yesterday was one of those days with lots of white clouds, the plane being buffeted by the wind, and IF there was a small pod on the top of the plane, lying down on the top covered by a clear shell, I would have paid extra just to be in the pod for awhile. Could have sunbathed a little, stretched out and not be cramped in the seats below, watch the plane dart in and out of the white clouds....
For thrill seekers, this could actually be an enticement!
