High-Speed Car Transportation | |||||||||||||||||
Have you ever wanted to drive to California from New York in less than a day? This could be possible with a new upgraded interstate system. You could drive your car to the nearest entry point where you will drive your own car onto a platform. The platform may have a surrounding encasement, as if you were driving your car into a bigger car. A worker would secure your car onto the platform so it won't move. This platform would be mounted on a roler-coaster type of track. The platform would be driven by electric motors powered by the rails with a computerized network running the system. It would have a computer link that you would place into your car that would recieve power and data from the platform (through the track). Once you have reached your top speed it would be safe to get up and walk around inside of the platform. The platform would have climate control so you can simply roll down the windows of your car. Your car's battery terminals could be connected to the platform so it can run with the engine off. The computer link would tell you where you were, ETA, have internet and TV acess. The link would also allow you to connect other computers. This self contained moving room could reach speeds of hundreds of miles per hour in your own car. It would cost a fee, of course, but would save greatly on gas and time. Exits would be spaced out as far as a state apart so you would board on the nearest entrance, exit on the one nearest your destination, than take a freeway the rest of the way. A network of computers would monitor where cars are on the tracks and manage entering and exiting so it performs as efficiently as possible. If a platform/car were to experience problems it would immediately alert the passengers of the cabin and alert all other passengers nearby. The network would automatically react depending on the circumstances and, if possible, not break until all passengers have reached their seats inside of their car. If cars need to slow down to avoid collision, the network could do this to all cars at the same time. Emergency cars would be stationed at every exit and would be supplied with their own power (in case power goes down or high voltage power must be shut down for safety). The emergency vehicle would travel at high speeds to the location where help is needed. The platform would have an emergency shut-off and emergency exits. If harmful gases collected inside of the chamber, the climate control system would be able to recirculate all air in minuets and keep the passengers safe. In case of a blackout, all cars would have backup batteries or generators to keep vitals of the platform working (ie. breaks, lights, climate control, computer network). I have thought about this for many years and it is not a far-fetched idea at all. We posses the technology to create the entire system today!

You seem to be proposing a high speed railroad system that accommodates cars.
Sounds like the old ferry boats, where you could get out and sit on a bench, get a coffee, etc.
A speed of several hundred miles per hour would involve some serious aerodynamics, not to mention propulsion power. I suspect the fuel usage at ground level would be too expensive.
It already exists, but only at about 125mph/200kph.
http://www.eurotunnel.com/ukcP3Main/ukcPassengers/ You can get out of your car as soon as you are on board, don't have to wait until it is up to full speed.
http://www.bls.ch/d/autoverlad/autoverlad.php, though in this case it is not as fast and you can't get out of your car (the wagons have open sides).
Such a system could be run at 200mph/320kph and over greater distances, plenty of trains go that fast. But the cost would be high, you would be paying to haul 1-2 tonnes of car instead of 50-100Kg of person. A lot cheaper just to get out of your car and get in the train yourself. You get soft seats, more room, you can buy a coffee etc.
i have thought about this idea myself, but have always come to the conclusion that it is too complex and costly to implement.
Amtrak operates just such a system to get people and cars from the NE to FL overnight.
Just it costs a great deal and isn't all-that profitable.

Probably more economical to fly via commercial airliner at 500 mph to your destination, and rent, buy, or lease a car when you get there.
I don't really see an advantage in taking the family bus along unless it's for a long-term relocation, and even then I'd probably ship the car by conventional means and fly by airliner myself.
Now, when coast-to-coast "bullet trains" are available in the US, I may change my mind, but only if it's a good bit cheaper than flying.
