eliminate car advertising | |||||||||||||||||
I'd like to see an end to all advertising on t.v. That may be too much to ask for. So how about just a ban on car advertising for starters. Besides station self-promotions, car ads are the most ubiquitous form of advertising on t.v. Most of these ads are really boring and they all look alike. And my instinct says they don't work. If I'm thinking of plunking down fifteen or twenty grand on a car, I'm not going to be influenced by a thirty second spot on ABC. I believe the cost of advertising does nothing but increase the cost of the car. How about if all the car companies unanimously agreed to a moratorium on advertising for one year. I'll bet they'd discover at the end of the year that buying trends had remained exactly the same. Everyone who wanted a Volvo bought a Volvo, everyone who wanted a Lexus bought a Lexus, etc, etc. Mini Cooper has NO ads on t.v. and their sales are robust. Doesn't that tell us something? I'm sure most of you will agree this is a good idea. Now we just need to convince the car companies too.

Most car advertising I don't mind. I'd sooner see a few car ads than have the TV quality drop due to reduced ad revenue, or have to pay more for the TV I now enjoy.
