Digital indexer for books | |||||||||||||||||
Imagine this situation #1: You have read the book and are writing an essay on it and want to use citations from the book, but can't remember which page they are on. Now imagine you have to find more then 5 citations in a book of over 500 pages. Also keep in mind that an essay is due tomorrow and you have another one to write. Situation #2: You are half way through the book when you realize that an important description of the character that you saw somewhere in the book would make your understanding of that character much more complete, but you are too lazy to look for it knowing that it might take a while, but time is a factor. Imagine if you had a handy gadget attached to the back of the book which can be flipped and typed on while you are reading like a small night light for the book. It would look like blackberry phone with keyboard and you can type any phrase, keyword, reference and it will point you to the exact location where this phrase occurs in the book up to the line number and multile occurances. So the gadget will basically contain the whole book in digital format powered by a search engine. The sky is the limit to what imformation for this partcular book you want to search for. It can have a summary menu, breakdown of all characters, their descriptions etc. Another important feature of the gadget is the ability to download the digital book format from Google prints which already digitized books in all major libraries and universities of the US. So this way you can have several book uploaded into the gadget and navigate through any of them. It can work together with digital memory cards which will allow you to choose the amount of books you want in your gadget. I think if I had this sort of thing when I was studying I would not have to take English 1A twice ;-).

Being able to digitally search the contents of books used in school, whether its a text book, novel, or other reference would save a lot of students a lot of time. I forgot how much time I spent looking for this kind of info when I was a student.
I don't know if a specific gadget is needed for this, but it seems publishers could easily provide an online electronic index of the book which could be searched for keywords and phrases without making a complete electronic copy of the book available.
Maybe schools could require that publishers provide this for all books the school purchases.
