Recently my wife was in an accident where she was forced to stop on the side on the road and the person that hit her drove off. She did not get the license plate number of the person who hit her, but I remembered that the highway where the accident occurred was monitored by Transguide (I don't know if other cities have a similar system, but in San Antonio we have traffic cameras that monitor traffic conditions on the highways throughout the city). I called them to see if thay had a record of the accident, but they told me that the cameras only operated in real time and that they did not keep records on file (which I still find hard to believe). The other reason (which does seems more plausible) is that they would be dragged into court cases everyday to supply records for court cases.

If that is the case, why not have someone pay the city for the use of their traffic cameras to record this kind of information? This would take the burden off of the city to supply evidence in court cases, and the city would be getting another source of revenue. The company who has access to these records would not only receive money from court cases, but they could also charge a kind of insurance, where residents of the city would pay to have access to the company's records and resources.

If it were to be such a great source of revenue why hasn't there been a privately held company chomping at the bit to install cameras on every power pole in the country?

I'm guessing it's because there wouldn't be enough demand for the services to justify the cost.

I'm also guessing the real reason the city's cameras only operate in real time might have something to do with the citizens concerns about Big Brother.
