How about installing RFID scanners in shopping carts at groceries with a display of the running total cost. You can place items or remove items from the cart which would update the total in real time. (this might discourage people from buying more than they need which is not something grocery chains would love). add a credit card reader to the cart and you could even swipe your credit card to complete the purchase. no need to stand in line, scan individual products and bag products. also I would prefer grocery stores stop using plastic bags. grocery stores should sell paper bags for small change like they do in europe. people can bring in their own paper bags for shopping.

It would require some infrastructure (especially the portable units), and means of "cross contamination" of RFID signals. Bar code reading is a bit more sure, and takes a bit less infrastructure.
