The basics... recycle your shower water for the toilet, etc. Water in the kitchen, shower and other uses is not completely dirty for some other uses. A system that can monitor the amount of "dirt" in water or "bad color" could save it for later use. This water is then reused for flushing the toilet, etc. Think of how many times a person flushes it, if you use it 5 times a day, that could be 5 gallons... multiply by 365 (or 366 for leap years hehe)... A central tank could store this water for later use in flushing toilets or even purify partially for use in irrigation or "cleaning". I'm not a scientist but a filtering method could aid in improving the uses thereafter.

You can filter it through an indoor garden with certain species, and use that to water your lawn and flush your toilet and things like that.
