Why not have a color electronic tablet that you can upload electronic textbooks onto. Also make it a touch screen so you can highlight words, click a word to look up it's meaning, and be able scroll through pages with just a flick of the finger. On the sides of the screen it could show stacked pages so you could quilkly flip through pages just like with a real book. In the index you could click to be immediately taken to the page and same for the contents. You could also bookmark pages easily. This would mean cheaper books due to not having to print and bound them, and also would eliminate carrying 5 textbooks around thus killing your back.
