Why not have a feature that can be activated/deactivated like subtitles on DVDs, but with a digit on top of people and a name plate in bottom right corner, so its easier to identify people in movies so I can follow movies better.

Here is a screenshot of Die Hard 4.0. In die hard 4.0 John mcclane is easy to identify but in other movies its hard to see which is which.

SD-DVDs have been out too long to incorporate that into them, both in existing releases, and existing hardware.

Maybe new HD DVD formats could have that feature added though.

It would take a bit of work in the DVD authoring stage to identify and mark each character/actor.

Yes, but the DVD authoring are already doing work to provide service to its customers. Like dubbing (translating the speaking in the movie), subtitles in many languages and so on.

I dont think one single persons does this, instead one person responsible for Spanish translation gets a script with all the texts. Another person that is "master" for all translations gets a copy of the movie to write down all times where the subtitles should appear.

Because the character identification can be understanded in any language, it only contains names and digits, it only needs to be provided as a "Identify characters?" "yes/no" option in the language selection menu. Then only one extra single worker is needed to do all work with the identification.

The software could do most of the work too. The authoriter could simply mark a point of a person to "lock" the digit to, and then the digit moves along with the character. The only thing the authoriter needs to do manually is telling which person is which after each scene change, and the locking point. The software could do the rest and store it as coordinates of each digit, and which names is which digit.

And of course the whole thing could make use of the "Subtitles" feature that is available in most DVD players so no change of hardware is required.
