my stapler has a little hole in the side--when there a staples left, you see them. When they're nearly gone, you see a red circle. Same effect, but no battery. Occam's razor--I prefer the simpler solution.

Or mark the end of the staple row with a noticeable paint. When you start getting colored staples, you need to add more.
