A lot of ideas a duplicates of already submitted ideas. Presumably, people didn't know someone already suggested a similar idea. Expecting to search if a similar idea exists is not fair expectation I think - takes too much time.

Solution: Search for old ideas as when people try to submit new ideas. This is exactly what Google Groups does.

This is how it works:When you try to submit a new idea, a column opens up automatically on the side indicating "Have you looked at these ideas?"

Another idea would be to add a button so readers can flag duplicate or near-duplicate ideas. At that point the moderator could convert the duplicate idea into a comment on the old idea, or automatically insert a link in a "similar idea" box,--or just delete it, with an automatic e-mail message sent to the submitter.
