Paint Ball Road Lines | |||||||||||||||||
In the UK and Ireland a solid white line in the middle of the road indicates that you must not overtake on that stretch of the road. Many fatal accidents arise from people not obeying this line. Head-on overtaking collisions usually have poor outcomes. What if the line was dotted with little paint packs containing a bright yellow permanent paint that would splash onto the tyres and paintwork of the offending vehicle.Knowledge of these paint packs would deter ordinary motorists from crossing the line and ruining their tyres. It would also mark out "boy racers" to police and their ever suffering parents. To get round the problem of vehicles simply wanting to turn on the road (inadvisible anyway in solid line areas) the paint packs would only explode when driven over at speed.

In the US, they wouldn't last very long. Currently, we have hard plastic hemispheres among the stripes on dangerous roads, and they cause tremendous noise and shaking of the vehicle. On the sides of the road for safety, we have grooves cut into the road surface, perpendicular to the road direction. They cause a load high pitched sound.
I suspect the paintballs would be a real pain to maintain. I also suspect the first snowplow would distribute paint all over the road.
why not use concrete Jersey barriers instead of a double-yellow (white for you) line? Or you could put land-mines at both ends.
Sarcasm aside, I don't really see this as a problem in Kansas. We have lots of long-flat highways. Maybe this problem really does need solved. But Belmont mentions hemispheres in USA roads, but we don't have them here--the snow plows would just destroy them and paint-ball packs too. Maybe concrete barriers would be good?
The overtaking part is just because all of you people believe the trucks should be going ten mph slower than the cars (see 'dual speed limits').
And the cops and my parents already knew who the 'boyracers' were--they (we) drive the hot-rod cars with the fat tires.
I read your idea the other day, then I see this article in my local paper:http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080108/NEWS01/80108045
The regular yellow paint wasn't dry yet, motorists go over it, and they actually can file a claim to get money for paint damage! No one even questions why they were driving on the lines! I just had to laugh.Only in my town would people get paid for driving like an idiot.
