Poinsettia Recycling | |||||||||||||||||
It seems like every year my house ends up with a poinsettia. And it seems like every year it degenerates into a leafy green plant. I have kept some of them for more than 5 years and they get rather large after a while. I noticed in the greenhouses that the bigger the poinsetta the more they charge for it. This is understandable and I have no problem with that. They have to maintain them for longer to sell them at that size. I also know that you can get them to "bloom" again by carefully regulating the amount of light they get. I do not have the time, space, or inclination to make that happen. So, what if the sellers had a return policy of sorts. You would buy the poinsettia, keep it around until some arbitrary "return by" date, and if you return it you would get a coupon to be used against your next year's purchase? The plants would be returned to the greenhouse. The plant would be cared for properly and come next year the greenhouse could sell it for more. I could use my return coupon to offset the cost of larger and larger poinsettias. And I suspect that less plants would end up in the garbage after christmas.

Plant rental or lease. They have outfits in LA which rent plants for movies.
Property shops don't rent out flowers and don't market to non-industry consumers. They're intended for actual "greenery" like trees and potted plants that can't be procured from local shops. Poinsettia recycling would work better at either large-scale or specialty florists.
