Although there is surely a huge number of people waiting for organ donation I wonder if all people who indicate they are willing donors routinely undergo tissue compatibility testing before they are ready to actually donate (or die). If all potential donors could be precisely classified then when the time for donation arrives the recipients could probably more quickly be matched to the donors which might save critical time in life or death situations.

Some of the early work on tissue typing for kidney transplants was done at UCLA in the late sixties. Computerized databases were created. Recipients must be matched to donors, which is why there is often a very long wait.
