I've read that ancient Indian tribes used to have a clowns. (perhaps tribes still do?) The clowns were allowed to say anything or do anything in front of the chief. So if the chief were a complete DUMBO the clown would put on an act at the fire gathering to show the chief up. Kinda get him back in line. The chief would have no recourse on the clown.

Perhaps as a skit. Our country could elect to have a clown day put on the calendar.Rather than go through the political process we could all hit the street in a parade and show how we feel about the foolish political events taking place.

You can see this on a small scale out in front of the white house in DC most days. I applaud our country's volunteer clowns.

They have the press club roasts in DC, where they get to make fun of the prez, and he gets to make fun of himself.

Bush making fun of himself is like the monster in "Young Frankenstein" dancing "Putting on the Ritz". I have yet to see somebody tossing Bush peanuts to keep him dancing but Cheney would fill the role nicely.

Your idea is sort-of a court-jester, like feudal kings had. I think they often got executed when they went too far.

I've always thought clowns were creepy. When I think of the kind of man that would become a clown, I don't understand why people would think they're funny or even more importantly, why people would let their children around them.

Women clowns I haven't decided on yet.

Here's an interesting story that says English children may agree:
