I was recently travelling in Israel and Turkey and I thought to myself, "I keep taking pictures of the landscape, but where am I in these pictures." Everyone finds it annoying to ask a random person to take a picture of them and most of the time the person screws it up anyway. So I started thinking that it might be possible to offer a service for people on vacation to have their own personal photographer to follow them around and take pictures of them. Although I have no statistics, I am sure there are number of photography students who would be more than happy to earn a few extra bucks by following around some tourists taking their picture. You might even be able to couple this service with some high end travel agency. The idea may not make financial sense, but wouldn't it be kind of cool having people in a foreign country think you are somebody famous? Any future celebrities out there?

I've had my 15 minutes of fame and found it embarrassing. I prefer anonymity. There is always somebody around who will take your picture and the likelihood of them running off with your camera is not too great.

I'm a little skeptical of this idea for the reason that when I need one, it would be great except for the following: a)The thought of having someone follow me around on vacation when I purposely chose to get away from everything sounds a little invasive, b)I wouldn't want someone around all the time while I'm with someone but then when I do, would I call them up or page them? In this case, it's like someone will be following us unless we have a specific schedule, which would be hard to plan ahead of time. Great for moment when a photographer is needed but I'm not so sure about the overall trip.

An alternative that would work in many situations is a very compact tripod, used in conjunction with the time-delay shutter feature on most cameras. In particular, there's a $22 two-pack offer of the Gorillapod flexible tripod and a bottletop tripod (the size of a bottle cap). The first has three legs that can be wrapped securely around any vertical post, radio antenna, or anything it can get a grip on. Amazon sells it at:
