eMentoring - Reducing AIDS | |||||||||||||||||
Many girls (as young as 8 years old) are trafficked into prostitution in India suffering daily the worst atrocities known to mankind including being gang raped, burned with cigarettes, and beaten with sticks. Certain nonprofits (www.centsofrelief.org and Apne Aap) are collaborating to rescue these girls with hopes of rehabilitating them. Using the power of the Internet and computers, a program we could call "eMentoring" could be developed whereby these girls would be taught computer skills and English simultaneously. These young girls could chat via the net to children in other countries exposing them to a new culture. Furthermore, the idea could be expanded into a call center allowing these girls to become Hindi teachers for foreign business sending employees overseas. Using video conferencing, the girl would walk an employee through a Hindi curriculum enabling the employee to become proficient in Hindi. The business sponsoring the employee would pay into a fund supporting these girls allowing them release from the bondage of sex slavery.

They could also learn programming, and get a job with an American software developer.
I would also suggest finding their mothers, and giving them free birth control pills.
I love this idea using the Internet to chat and mentor children! I first came across this theme when reading Neil Stephenson's book "The Diamond Age."
This particular application in India is a great idea. Also, a lot of bedridden or elderly could become mentors, bringing meaning & purpose to their lives while helping children and reducing AIDS at the same time. I would gladly volunteer!
