When I read a book, I often want to bookmark various pages or use some kind of placeholder so that I can move between pages without losing my place as I read. The problem with the standard bookmark is that it is a thin paper item that sometimes slips out. And in order to bookmark various pages, I need numerous bookmarks. My idea is an item, probably plastic, that attaches to the top or bottom of a book around the spine and which has numerous thin leaves or bookmarks that can be placed between the pages. The leaves would likely fold out or come out like a switchblade. The item could be expanded (widened) or shortened (narrowed) depending on the size of the book and where you want to place the leaves within the pages of a book.

If such an item exists it would be obscure, but maybe googling could turn it up. It wouldn't work for paperbacks. What one can do now are use the variation of Post-It notes known as book flags (I think), or a nice, unobtrusive metal clip known as a "book dart," sold in tins of 50.
