At metro stations there should be an option for customers paying directly with a credit card to pay at the turnsil. It can be very irritating to wait in line to buy a metro card standing behind numerous customers with crumbled bills that won't go through the machines. Plus if there were individual credit card readers at the turnsil, less paper card would be wasted.

good idea, I can envision the Visa commercial already!

You definitely see similar products abroad. Domestically, Citibank started offering this product in DC (credit card doubling as metro pass) in 2006.

In Singapore you recycle your Metrocard after using it so at least it doesn't waste paper. I like the credit card idea, but it could also be expanded to debit/check/ATM cards.
