On any given day there are a variety of types of transportation that an individual requires: a pick-up truck to move, a SUV for a large family outing, a reliable fuel efficient compact to commute to and from work, a convertible for a weekend at the beach. To that end, a major automotive manufacturer should move away from the traditional "manufacture to sell model" to a "manufacture to unit rental model" with the option to purchase for those who want to own a private vehicle. This would allow an individual, through the purchase of one “vehicle unit” at differentiated price tranches relative to number / quality model choices, to swap out their vehicle at a local exchange center whenever their usage needs changed.
Further, as an individual would own a “vehicle unit” transferable to any location within the automotive manufactures national / international footprint, individuals would have an immense amount of flexibility unavailable under the current model. If for example an individual was flying from one city to another they could simply turn their vehicle in at an exchange center co-located with their local airport and pick up another when they landed. Many individuals and families would still want to have at least one vehicle that they owned outright, allowing some aspects of the current retail structure to remain, but the expansion of the current automobile platform to include transferable “vehicle units” would provide a significant competitive advantage to any of the major manufacturers within the current market.
