Voting for presidential candidates, especially in the primaries when there are many candidates, should be a ranking of each candidate on a scale from 1 to 10. The candidate with the highest average score wins. This way, it is clear who is second and third choice, there's no risk of "splitting the vote", and objectively good (qualified, charismatic, experienced) candidates will score well, despite who else is running. The current system leaves a lot of room for an undesirable candidate to emerge as a winner.

What if the candidates are all undesirable ?

Instant Runoff Voting would achieve the same aims, has more momentum behind it, is now feasible because electronic voting machines can do the math, and probably is less vulnerable to 'gaming the system" or "strategic voting."
