Young Artists Syndicate | |||||||||||||||||
Having served my time as an editorial cartoonist for several student publications, I was always surprised that when an amateur such as myself missed a deadline my editors were often left with little alternative but to go to a national syndicate if they wanted to fill the void on the editorial page. Forcing a college publication to use its limited funds to publish the work of professionals that often carried a different tone than the typical student-drawn fare seemed like a waste of a meager budget. In addition, these same syndicates were all too happy to reject young artists' submissions because unknowns were too hard to sell to national publications. It seems to me a better solution would be to create a syndicate made up of young artists focused on providing content for college/young adult publications. Such an association could offer these publications a product more in line with their typical fare while also allowing young artists to build a more marketable reputation.
