How often have you been tempted to sneak soda or candy into the movies to avoid paying $5 for Sour Patch Kids? Or perhaps you've just been turned off by what's on sale at the concession stand. Theaters count on selling that stuff to make a profit. What if they offered healthy alternatives that didn't leave you feeling icky once the movie ended? Snacks like pita chips and hummus or carrots and dip. They are easily packaged for quick sale (think carrot sticks at Cosi). These fresh refrigerated snacks could provide an attractive alternative to the candy sold at the CVS next door to the theater.

I never really understood why theaters don't allow you to bring outside food. If I know that I don't like anything at the concession stand I won't buy anything. If I can't bring in my own food I still won't buy anything. But I guess people don't care that much anymore or are too lazy. Anyway, I think it would be a great idea for theaters to sell more healthy food. My only concern would be that it would give them a reason to jack the prices up even more. Although, now that I think about it, I went to the Brookfield Zoo near Chicago and they had a completely organic food stand and I think they even had veggie hotdogs and burgers. And I don't remember them being more expensive than the other food. But that was a zoo.

You know what, I also just thought of what it was like to go to a movie a long time ago. (When they played the news before the movie.) It was a big event to go to the movies. But now with Netflix and Tivo (not to mention that the theaters around here aren't that comfortable or clean) people go to the movies just because they can't wait for the movie to come out on DVD. If Theaters started selling healthier more wholesome foods (and why stop there, add to that list gourmet coffee or tea, wraps, hot chocolate, salad) they could turn movie going into a big event again.
