All bills paid in cash should be rounded to the nearest five or ten cent denomination, eliminating the need for the penny. The difference between the original bill and the rounded bill would then be used to reduce the federal budget deficit or fund some social welfare program (health care, after school education, etc).

I think there has been a lot of murmur about killing the penny, especially in 2006 when the price of the metal to make one penny has actually risen above one cent, making it an economically unprofitable item. However, I think Washington admires tradition too much to ever kill the penny off. What is Mr. Lincoln gonna do in his grave when he appears just on the five dollar bill? I'm all about reducing the deficit though!

If we wait 50 years the dime will be worth what a penny was 50 years ago and we can just shift the decimal point and proclaim a New Dollar, the way the French did with their New Franc.

I don't think we have to wait at all. According to the Zeitgeist movie, money was worth twenty times more in the 19-teens when the Federal Reserve was created.

The Russians moved their decimal three places in 1998.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_ruble
